Par atpalicību, vērtībām un vienoto Eiropu, jeb vīzija Nr.4

Kāpēc mēs esam tur, kur mēs esam? Kāpēc 20 gadus pēc padomju murga beigām mūsu dzīves līmenis pat tuvu nav attīstīto Rietumvalstu līmenim, neskatoties uz to, ka situācija ekonomikas jomā pēc padomju režīma kraha bija nesalīdzināmi labāka par to, kāda tā bija pēckara Eiropā ar visu Māršala palīdzības plānu? Kāpēc, neskatoties uz intelektuālo potenciālu un latviešiem raksturīgo darba mīlestību, arvien jāiet ar izstieptu roku pie citiem? Kāpēc vārdos tiek runāts par demokrātisku un pilsonisku sabiedrību, bet visai sabiedrībai svarīgi lēmumi tiek pieņemti slepenībā un šaurā lokā?

Kādi tam ir cēloņi - gadsimtu laikā veidotas demokrātiskas tradīcijas Rietumeiropā un Ziemeļamerikā ar atbilstoši izveidojušos vērtību skalu un domāšanas stilu - process, kas mums aizgāja secen, vai varbūt pie vainas ir mentalitāte, reliģija un klimats? Un ko darīt, lai mainītu lietu kartību?

Ja arī Tevi uztrauc šie jautājumi, tad izlasi rakstu līdz galam, uztverot to nevis kā mēģinājumu “ārstēt” vai mācīt dzīvot, bet vienkārši kā nelielas pārdomas pēc izdzertas šņabja glāzes. Runa tur būs par šīm pašām lietām tikai daudz dziļāk un kompetentāk, un nav svarīgi, ka Krievijas kontekstā, jo, patīk tas kādam vai nepatīk, bet problēmas ir līdzīgas kā jebkurai valstij no bijušās postpadomju telpas.

Par atpalicību

Nu nesanāk tā nesāpīgi un veikli pārlekt no „attīstīta” sociālisma uz attīstītu demokrātiju un tirgus ekonomiku. Un noteicošais tam nav tik daudz materiālā puse, bet gan tas, kas galvā. It kā jau formāli tirgus likumi darbojas. Un tomēr cik labi, ka ir tādi uzņēmumi ar valsts kapitāla daļu un monopolstāvokli kādā nozarē, kur sev un radiem-draugiem izkārtot bezbēdu dzīvi valdēs.

Un tad vēl „universālie” ministri un viņu tikpat „universālie” galmi. Un pareizi, jo ministram nav jābūt nozares profam, bet jāīsteno politiskā vadība uzņemoties politisko atbildību (kā patīk šis vārdu salikums), kas izpaužas kā iepriekšējā galma nomaiņa un „grandiozas” reformas, lai visiem parādītu, cik iepriekšējie ir bijuši nekompetenti. Pēc gada vai diviem nāk citi, un sākas viss no gala (izglītības sistēmas reformas tiešām ir nepieciešamas, un laiks rādīs Ķīļa darbošanās jēgu).

Tad vēl valsts un pašvaldību iepirkumi ar Dienvidu tiltiem un ūdensvadiem, kas izbūvēti ar kosmisko tehnoloģiju palīdzību ( ja nebūtu ES uzspiesta likumdošana iepirkumu sfērā, tad var tikai iedomāties, kāds bezpreģels tur valdītu)... Par „tirgus ekonomiku” un ‘’demokrātisku” pārvaldi tādās vietās kā Ventspils sarakstīts jau pietiekoši, tādēļ neatkārtošos. Sliktākais ir tas, ka piemērs rada vēlmi atkārtot „veiksmes” stāstu. Par banku lietām būs atsevišķs stāsts.

Par vērtībām un mentalitāti

Šogad jau sesto reizi žurnāls Forbes savā pasaules ietekmīgāko sieviešu saraksta pirmajā vietā ir ierindojis Vācijas kancleri Angelu Merkeli. Dzīvo kundze ar vīru daudzdzīvokļu mājā Berlīnes centrā, atpūsties brauc uz Itālijas Vidusjūras piekrasti, kur dzīvo četrzvaigžņu viesnīcā, turklāt vīrs brauc ar atsevišķu avio reisu, tā kā kanclerei pēc statusa pienākas bundesvēra lidmašīna, par ko viņas vīram būtu jāmaksā krietni lielāka summa nekā par low cost easy Jet.

Ierodoties uz Vāgnera operas festivālu, kundze satrieca visus ar savu tērpu - un nevis tā dārdzības dēļ, bet gan ar to, ka minētais tērps bija viņai mugurā šajā pašā pasākumā 4 gadus atpakaļ. Ja jau aizskārām jautājumu par politiķu pārvietošanos, tad gribētu piebilst, ka Norvēģijas premjers Jens Stoltenbergs paradis uz darbu iet ar kājām un turklāt bez bākugunīm, neskatoties uz Breivika sarīkoto sprādzienu pie parlamenta ēkas.

Par integrāciju Eiropā un pilsonisku sabiedrību

Lai nu cik neideāla ES būtu ar visām savām problēmām, tomēr grūti noliegt, ka ES dibināšanas līgums un no tā izrietošās direktīvas un regulas, kas jāievēro visiem dalībniekiem, ir vairāk vai mazāk balstītas uz demokrātiskiem principiem un veselo saprātu, kas pabaudīts desmitu gadu garumā. Un tas, manuprāt, ir primārs, salīdzinot ar materiālo pusi. Ja runā par materiālo, tad jāpiezīmē, ka LV saņem vairāk nekā iemaksā. Domāju, ka nekļūdīšos, ja teikšu, ka, ja nebūtu ES KF un ERAF līdzfinansējuma infrastruktūrai, tad, sākoties krīzei, būvniecības nozare LV iznīktu.

 Kas ir tie, kas pret? Pirmā grupa - vietējie "bezpreģeļščiki" un viņu pakalpiņi, tādi kā A. Lembergs, kas būtībā iedibinājis totalitāru režīmu vienas pilsētas teritorijā ar kontroli visās jomās, sākot no medijiem un beidzot ar biznesu. No šejienes arī visi šie epiteti par "sorosītu sazvērestību".
Ja nebūtu ES prasības, tad nebūtu ne KNAB (pie tā, ka kantoris ir izrādījies mazspējīgs, protams, arī ir vainīga Brisele), ne sakārtota likumdošana valsts un pašvaldību iepirkumu sfērā, ne daudz kas cits.

Otrā grupa - postsovjeti, kuri siekalodamies skatās uz Austrumiem un sapņo par atgriešanos impērijas paspārnē. Uz šīs iedzīvotāju grupas rēķina taisa sev politisko kapitālu Urbanovičs, Ušakovs, Elksniņš un viss tas pārējais bars, turklāt ļoti labi saprotot, ka "cieša sadarbība visās jomās" (citāts no SC programmas) ar totalitāriem režīmiem ne pie kā laba nenovedīs, atskaitot dividendes personīgi sev.

Trešā grupa - līdz izmisumam novestie (lielā mērā pateicoties tieši pirmās grupas darboņiem), kas bezspēcīgā protestā atbalsta savus izģērbējus, necenšoties apjēgt to, ka visās savās nelaimēs pirmkārt jāvaino pašam sevi, jo padevīgi ļāvuši sevi izģērbt. Ārējā ienaidnieka meklēšana (skandināvu bankas, sorosīti, žīdu pārvaldītā Rietumu pasaule, kas tā vien tīko atņemt nabaga latvietim pēdējo) atbrīvo no nepatīkamas nepieciešamības meklēt savu neveiksmju cēloni pašiem sevī.

Pēdējā laikā ir uzvirmojušas kaislības ap eiro ieviešanu, un saprotams, jo palicis gads līdz valdības plānotajam termiņam. Tomēr izrādās, ka iedzīvotāju vairākums nav sajūsmā par plānoto pasākumu. Paceļas jautājums par referendumu. Finanšu ministrs A. Vilks intervijā Latvijas Radio saka: „Par eiro ieviešanu referendumā nav jālemj, šādu jautājumu izlemšana ir jāuztic ekspertiem… iedzīvotājiem šādos jautājumos ir grūti izvērtēt visas nianses, tāpēc jāuzticas speciālistiem un lēmumu jāļauj pieņemt valdībai un parlamentam… Tad referendumu vajadzēja arī par starptautiskā aizdevuma programmu".

 Jā, Vilka kungs, vajadzēja referendumu arī par aizdevumu. Bet tauta ir muļķe un neko nesapratīs, izglīto vai neizglīto. Jāpiezīmē, ka ministrs mēģināja šo izglītošanu veikt 21.11.2012 - http://www.ltv.lv/video/sastregumstunda/18376/sastregumstunda-21.11.2012/. Tikai izglītošana izskatījās pēc nevarīgas vāvuļošanas - kaut ko mēģināja stāstīt par priekšrocībām aizņemoties naudu no ECB bez konkrētiem cipariem un piemēriem. Uz šī fona ministra oponente - Lemberga runas sieva Dana Reizniece, pēc profesijas tulks un terminoloģijas speciāliste (ja var ticēt Vikipēdijai, tad arī šahiste un politiķe), izskatījās daudz pārliecinošāka.

Dombrovskis paziņo, ka referendumam nav atlicis laika. Tad jājautā, kas liedza veikt izglītošanu un referendumu savlaicīgi?

Lūk, šeit arī parādās valdošas elites liekulība - tiek pļāpāts par pilsonisku sabiedrību un iedzīvotāju iesaistīšanu valsts pārvaldē, tanī pat laikā jautājumos, kas skar ikvienu, tiek liegta iespēja procesu iespaidot.

S. Āboltiņa piedaloties ES valstu parlamentu priekšsēdētāju konferencē Varšavā 20.04.2012, skaisti runāja: „„Tieši caur līdzdalību, nevis pārstāvību sabiedrībai tiek radītas daudz lielākas iespējas piedalīties parlamentārajā lēmumu pieņemšanas procesā, un būtiski paplašinās cilvēku loks, kam ir pieeja šādām iespējām,” norādīja Saeimas priekšsēdētāja. Viņa aicināja arī ES parlamentu priekšsēdētāju tikšanās formātā stiprināt līdzdalības saikni ar sabiedrību, medijiem un sociālajiem partneriem.”

Dombrovskis nule kā notikušajā Vienotības kongresā saka: „ES nākusi klajā ar iniciatīvām ekonomiskā pārvaldības uzlabošanai un fiskālās disciplīnas nostiprināšanai. To mērķis – līdzšinējās neefektīvās sistēmas vietā izveidot Eiropā reāli funkcionējošu fiskālās disciplīnas uzraudzības sistēmu ar kontroles un sankciju mehānismiem. Šie soļi ir pārliecinājuši arī „neatkarīgo arbitru” – starptautiskos finanšu tirgus. Dažas dienas vēlāk medijos paradās informācija par to, ka ES valstu finanšu ministriem otrdien, 04.12.2012 sanāksmē Briselē neizdevās panākt vienošanos par tā dēvēto banku savienību jeb vienotas banku uzraudzības sistēmas izveidošanu blokā, jo starp savienības valstīm šajā jautājumā bija dziļas domstarpības: http://financenet.tvnet.lv/zinas/445624-es_finansu_ministri_nevienojas_par_banku_savienibu_bloka

Tālāk Dombrovskis saka: „Ja aplūkojam scenāriju: kas notiktu, ja 2008. gadā, kad pasauli satricināja globālā finanšu krīze, Latvija būtu bijusi eirozonā? Parex bankas glābšanai mums būtu bijuši pieejami Eiropas Centrālās Bankas kredītresursi, un Latvijai nebūtu bijusi nepieciešama tik skaudra konsolidācijas programma un tik apjomīgs starptautiskais aizdevums”.

Ai, ai, Dombrovska kungs, nebija prāta darbs pieminēt Parex. Bet, ja jau esat pateikuši „A”, tad jāpasaka arī „B” par to, kā notika bankas pārņemšana - atklāti un, ņemot vērā sabiedrības viedokli, kā jau pilsoniskā sabiedrībā pieņemts. Ak atmiņa pievīlusi? Nu tad atgādināšu.

2008.g. 4. novembrī risinās galvenie notikumi — valdības sēdē slēgtajā daļā spriež par līgumu ar Karginu un Krasovicki. To uzdod sagatavot Finanšu ministrijai. Valdība izvirza 10 nosacījumus Parex bankas īpašniekiem.

Nedēļas beigās līgums ir gatavs, un 8. novembrī par to lemj Ministru kabinets. Vēlu vakarā valdība paziņo, ka valsts pārņem Parex. Valsts bankā ieguldīs 200 miljonus latu. Jau šajā sēde FKTK lūdz uzlikt ierobežojumus finanšu darbībām Parex. Valdība tos neuzliek.

Nākamajā dienā sākas lielākā naudas aizplūšana no Parex bankas. No 8. līdz 22. novembrim aizplūst 457 miljoni latu. FKTK atkal lūdz uzlikt ierobežojumus, bet Ministru kabinets to atkārtoti nedara. Visbeidzot 1. decembrī pēc jau trešā aicinājuma valdība ierobežo darījumus Parex bankā — līdz tam brīdim no bankas, pēc VK aprēķiniem, aizplūdis nedaudz vairāk par miljardu latu (1 003 483 810 latu).

Kā norāda VK, 8. novembra sēdē apstiprinātais ieguldījuma līgums starp valsti un Parex akcionāriem atšķiras no 4. novembra sēdē lemtā. No līguma pazuduši Karginam un Krasovickim nelabvēlīgi punkti — līgums vairs neprasa Karginam un Krasovckim visus savus depozītus ieguldīt bankas pamatkapitālā. Abi bijušie īpašnieki iegulda tikai pa 14 miljoniem latu katrs. Līgums vairs neuzstāj, ka bankā būtu jāiegulda arī cita manta, kas abiem īpašniekiem pieder tieši vai netieši. Līgums neatceļ īpaši labvēlīgos depozītu noguldījuma procentus, kas noslēgti ar akcionāriem un viņu ģimenes locekļiem. Vēl 4. novembrī tāda prasība līguma projektā bija.

Tas nav Ex-seržanta delīrija murgojums, bet gan Valsts kontroles atzinums par to, ka bankas pārņemšanas lielākie ieguvēji ir tās bijušie īpašnieki, nevis Latvijas valsts, un daudz kas no bankas pārņemšanas procesa ticis noslēpts. Un kā tur bija ar Krājbanku, kur piķis pa kluso ticis pārskaitīts 2 nedēļas pēc darbības apturēšanas?

Kaut arī personīgi esmu par tālāku integrāciju ES, tomēr līdz šim neesmu dzirdējis nevienu argumentu no valdošās elites puses, kas dotu man pārliecību par pievienošanos eirozonai lietderību no valdības noteiktajā termiņā. Lūdzu, pārlieciniet mani, ierindas pilsoni, runājot skaidrā un visiem saprotamā valodā.

Ja runā par Rietumu demokrātiju panākumiem, tad pilnīgi iespējams, ka viens no iemesliem tam ir šo valstu pilsoņu atbildības sajūta savas valsts priekšā, kas pastiprināta ar apziņu, ka katram ir iespējas ietekmēt procesus, izmantojot demokrātiskus institūtus, - tas, kā tik ļoti trūkst LV.

Земля не вращается вокруг Солнца. Earth is not revolving around the Sun

Если Вам кажется, что теория вращения Земли вокруг Солнца - это абсолютно доказанный факт, то Вы сильно ошибаетесь. В этой теории так много нестыковок, что она давно уже находится на одной полке с теорией Дарвина о происхождении человека от обезьяны. Кому-то выгодно, чтобы люди не знали правду, причём этот обман прививают с самого детства, со школы, чтобы затем человек рос, совершенно в лживом мироощущении. Самое удивительное, что многие люди настолько верят в то, что Земля вращается вокруг Солнца, что не способны воспринимать реальность. Т.е. нет (а в действительности и быть не может) жёсткой концепции, что именно земля вращается вокруг Солнца. На это на данный момент указывают два наиболее важных факта, это наличие аналеммы и уравнения времени. Our desires for resources and an unstoppable war machine to take them, have lead us to perdition of our world. There is no time left to debate this, as we have debated for the last century. Now that I have it, my next step will be the perfect flying machine.—

—An aeroplane driven by your engine?— I asked.

—The flying machine of the future—my flying machine—will be heavier than air, but it will not be an aeroplane. It will have no wings. It will be substantial, solid, stable. Chevrolet Spark EV to be priced under $25,000 with tax incentives

Chevrolet recently announced a slew of details about its upcoming electric Spark EV, breaking down specifics of the engine and giving us a general idea of what to expect from the car. A couple of details were left out, however, most notably the price. Well, the company has now announced that, after tax breaks, the Spark EV will cost under US$25,000.
The Spark EV's electric drive system delivers 130 hp (110 kW) and 400 lb.-ft. (542 Nm) of torque but Chevrolet is still yet to reveal how far one full battery charge will carry you, saying only that the EV will have a "range among (the) best in EV segment." We'll have to wait and see what that actually means in terms of real numbers.

Chevrolet has also unveiled a little more information about the interior of the car. The Spark EV will have two seven-inch LCDs that display infotainment and key vehicle information including the expected range based on driving habits and other conditions. The company's MyLink smartphone integration system comes standard and Siri is also built-in (but you need to own an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 to use it).

While no exact list price has been given for the Spark, GM says the new EV will be "priced under $25,000 with tax incentives." Electric car purchasers in the US receive a $7500 tax credit, so this would put the Spark's MSRP at around $32,500.

The initial markets for the Spark EV will be California, Oregon, Canada and South Korea.

As Greece reels from more economic pain, this report reveals claims that the far-right Golden Dawn party have heavily infiltrated the police. It's a stark warning of where the country could be headed. "Blood! Honour! Golden Dawn!" Dressed all in black and in protective gear, members of Golden Dawn look more like soldiers than protesters. As Greek civil society has been crumbling under economic pressures, their savage attacks on the immigrants they blame for the economic crisis have become more frequent and violent. "They kicked my face. I had to have metal plates implanted," an Egyptian fisherman tells us. Even more shocking though are the links that have been drawn between them and the state. For the first time in this report a senior police officer has spoken on camera to claim that successive governments in Greece allowed the ultra-nationalist party to infiltrate the police force. "The state apparatus have known Golden Dawn's every move for years now... the state made room for the terrorists. It did that deliberately to use them for its own purposes," he insists. A frightening snapshot of a country in crisis.

European Parliament votes to protect WikiLeaks

European Parliament votes to protect WikiLeaks. In a landmark decision today the European Parliament initiated the drafting of legislation that would stop the arbitrary banking blockades against WikiLeaks and other organizations facing economic censorship. This is an important signal from the European lawmakers. It is a recognition of the seriousness of the precedents set in December 2010, still in force, when Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Western Union and Bank of America launched a unilateral, extrajudicial banking blockade against donations to WikiLeaks. The blockade has cost the organization more than US$50 million. The US Treasury formally found last year that there is no lawful reason why WikiLeaks should be placed on the US embargo list, but the highly political blockade continues. WikiLeaks welcomes the support of MEPs on this important issue and agrees with the European Parliament, which "considers it likely that there will be a growing number of European companies whose activities are effectively dependent on being able to accept payments by card; [and] considers it to be in the public interest to define objective rules describing the circumstances and procedures under which card payment schemes may unilaterally refuse acceptance."

This underlines the claim by WikiLeaks that if the financial blockade against WikiLeaks is not stopped, US financial giants will be free to unilaterally decide which European companies and organizations live or die. As WikiLeaks has previously pointed out, this is an attack on fundamental rights that cannot be left unchallenged. The organization has already launched lawsuits in two European jurisdictions and is awaiting the final outcome in its complaint to the European Commission against the major credit card companies for violations of competition laws. The Commission’s decision is expected before the end of the year. WikiLeaks has been victorious in all court hearings about this issue to date.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said: "I welcome this response from EU lawmakers. European independence is important. But there is no sovereignty without economic sovereignty. Politicized US financial monopolies must not be able to censor European organizations with impunity."

Julian Assange's prolonged presence in the Ecuadorian embassy in London is creating headaches for the UK and Ecuador. With five countries drawn into the debate over his future, what options does he now have? "It's a great shame that this case has caused such controversy globally. Vai cilvēka dzīves mērķis ir maksāt nodokļus? Vai valsts neesam mēs paši? Vai tā nav mūsu pašu izvēle - maksāt vai nemaksāt? Vai nebūtu jārēķinās ar šādu sabiedrības viedokli veidojot attiecības ar sabiedrību?

Droši vien ir vēl daudzi jautājumi, kurus uzdodot, tā īsti viennozīmīgi atbildēt nevarēsim. Bet laiks iet uz priekšu un tas prasa atbildēt uz šiem jautājumiem. 

Šodien, lasot periodiskos izdevumus, valsts veido kaut ko līdzīgu nodokļu maratonam, kur nepārtraukti tur sabiedrību zināmā spriedzē un informē par savu veiksmīgi realizēto nodokļu iekasēšanas un administrēšanas politiku. Tikko izlasīju, ka nodokļi atkal ir iekasēti par vairāk kā 110% no plānotā apjoma. Šī informācija manī izraisa divējādas emocijas - varbūt tiešām viss iet uz augšu un viss ir kārtībā, bet no otras puses man jāsmejas, jo apkārtējā atmosfēra nabūt neliecina par apmierinātiem pilsoņiem, kuri dāsni iemaksā naudiņu valsts kasē. Un vai tikai šie skaitļi, ar ko operē plašzaziņas līdzekļi, nav stipri virtuāli, jo zinu daudzus uzņēmumus, kuriem kontos ir milzīgas summas, tikai tās ir ar mīnus zīmi.

Uzrakstīt par pārdomas par nodokļiem mani mudināja raksts, kurā kāds sabiedrība zināma persona mudināja pielāgot vēl lielākus sodusun vēl lielākas represijas, tiem, kuri nemaksā nodokļus. Tas man atsauca atmiņā iepriekš lasīto par to, kas tad īsti ir nodokļi un vai mums tiem būtu nepieciešams upurēties.

Vena no paskām par to kā nodokļi radās......Kādreiz senos laikos, kā arī raksta vēsures grāmatās, cilvēku suga bija divās sadalijusies divās nometnēs - klejotāji un tie, kuri bija izveidojuši apmetnes. Apmetnes pārvērtās ciemos, ciemi - apdzīvotās vietās, apdzīvotās vietas - pilsētās. Savukārt klejotāji klejoja no vienas vietas uz otru nopostot un aplaupot. Laikam ejot, radās situācija, ka klejotājiem/aupītājiem nebija, ko laupīt, jo nāca citi laupītāji, kuri neļāva atkopties ciematu un pilsētu iedzīvotājiem. Tad nāca periods, kas laupītāji nobāzējās pilsētā, tā solot aizsargāt tās iedzīvotājis, bet pretī prasot maksāt nodokļus. Šo sabiedrības modeli varētu saukt par  vienu no pirmajiem valsts struktūras izveides un nodokļu maksāšanas pirmsākumiem. 

Vai šī formula kaut ko neatgādina, ja to salīdzinam ar mūsdienām? Nemaksāsi nodokļus - tiksi cietumā. Tā patreiz tiek popularizēta nodokļu maksāšanas politika. Bet pēc būtības būtu jābūt otrādāk - nodokļi, ja tādi vispār jāmaksā - būtu jāmaksā labprātīgi un apjomos, kādus pats uzskati par  pieņemamiem?

Uzskatu, ka nodokļi ir tikai aizbrga augšējā daļa. Pati aizberga lielākā daļa sastāv no daudz nopietnākiem jautājumiem, kuri jārisina pirmām kārtām: 

- Kas ir valsts un kas ir valdība? Vai valsts un valdība sabiedrībai ir nepieciešama? Kas jāmaina valdības struktūrā vai organizācijā, lai visi sabiedrības locekļi būtu apmierināti?

- Ja valdība nepieciešama, tad kādas funkcijas tai jāveic - kontrolēt? dalīt un pārdalīt? organizēt? ko organizēt? 

- Kas ir nauda? vai tā ir vispār ir nepieciešama? Vai varat iedomāties kādas iespējas mums pavērtos, ja nebūtu naudas?

- Un pats galvanais - kas ir sabiedrības, un tās sastāvdaļas - personas, mērķis? Dzīvot? Mācīties? Izzināt? Radīt?

Tā es te kaut ko sagrābstīju nedaudz par šo, nedaudz par to. Bet tomēr galvenais jautājums ir - UZ KURIENI EJAM UN KO GRIBAM? Lai katrs uz šo jautājumu atbild pats.

Here I propose a different conceptual approach to the idea of transitioning into a resource-based economy. The first part addresses what arriving at solutions means, then my application of those concepts to deliver solutions that I have arrived at: how to transition into a RBE.

Imagining a World Without Money

Born on March 13, 1916, Jacque Fresco started his professional career as design consultant for Rotor Craft Helicopter Company. He served in the Army Design and Development Unit at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, U.S. and worked for the Raymond De-Icer Corporation based in Los Angeles, California, U.S., as a research engineer.[5][4] He worked for many companies and in many fields such as technical consultant and technical advisor to the motion picture industry, industrial design instructor at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In Los Angeles, he was colleague and work associate of psychologist Donald Powell Wilson.[5][4] In 1942, Fresco started the Revell Plastics Company (now Revell-Monogram) with Lou Glaser, working variously in aerospace research and development, architecture, efficient automobile design, bare-eye 3D cinematic projection methods and medical equipment design where he developed a three dimensional X-ray unit amongst other things. he Venus Project was started around 1975[2] by Fresco[1][6] and by former portrait artist, Roxanne Meadows[2] in Venus, Florida, USA. Its research center is a 21-acre (85,000 m2) property with various domed buildings of his design, where they work on books and films to demonstrate their concepts and ideas. Fresco has produced an extensive range of scale models based on his designs. [4] The Venus Project was incorporated in 1995.[7][8] Venus project was founded on the idea that poverty is caused by the stifling of progress in technology, which itself is caused by the present world's profit-driven economic system.[9] The progression of technology, if it were carried on independent of its profitability, Fresco theorizes, would make more resources available to more people thereby reducing corruption and greed, and instead make people more likely to help each other.[10][6][11] Fresco advocates against a money-based economy in favor of what he refers to as a resource-based economy.[12] In a 2008 interview with Fresco and Meadows, Fresco stated that a 'lack of credentials' has made it difficult for him to gain influence in academic circles.[2] He adds that when universities do invite him to speak, they often don't give him enough time to explain his views.

The controversial practice of exorcism is experiencing a popular revival. This disturbing report investigates the priests on the frontline, who claim they are fighting battles in a war against the devil. "I command you Satan: leave this woman immediately!" Father Massimiliano Pusceddu is a member of the growing band of young exorcists in the ranks of the Roman Catholic church. He's part of the fight against growing reports of demonic possession, attributed to "dark forces preying on the young". But the practice is not without critics. According to activist Marco Dimitri, "the problem is that most exorcisms are performed on people who are not of sound mind, who need psychological help. And that's why it's a criminal act". Whether superstition or gospel truth, this rare glimpse inside the practice makes one thing clear: the ritual is hugely traumatic for all of the individuals involved.

Scientists have taken the first ever snapshot of an atom's shadow—the smallest ever photographed using visible light. The imaging technique could have big implications for genetic research and cryptography, researchers say.

The pioneering shutterbugs used an electrical field to suspend a charged atom, or ion, of the element ytterbium in a vacuum chamber. They then shot a laser beam—about a thousand times wider than the atom—at the ytterbium.

The ytterbium atom absorbed a tiny portion of the light, and the resulting shadow was magnified by a lens attached to a microscope, then recorded via a digital camera sensor.

The team used ytterbium because they knew they could create lasers of the right color to be strongly absorbed by the element.

"Each element responds to different specific wavelengths ... so we would need different laser systems to use this technique on a different atom," said study leader Dave Kielpinski. Atoms, he added, are the smallest things that can be seen in visible light, and though the team's shadow shots are unprecedented, atoms themselves have been photographed before.

Since capturing the unique picture, the team has been refining their technique, creating (as yet unreleased) photos of ytterbium shadows twice as dark as in the above image, said Kielpinski, a physicist at Australia's Griffith University.

The group is also working on increasing the resolution of their images, so that it might one day be possible to see how the electrons orbiting an atom affect the shape of its shadow.

Atomic Encryption

The shadow-imaging technique could one day enable scientists to study DNA inside living cells by shining a laser at them and observing patterns of light absorption, the researchers say. Current techniques—involving attaching special molecules to DNA—are potentially harmful to cells.

The technology might also one day be harnessed to send information across "quantum cryptography networks," which would use single atoms as data-storage devices and quantum physics to guarantee privacy, Kielpinski said.

"Our work gives a new way to get light to talk to single atoms," he added, "so we can cook up new protocols for these storage nodes."

The atom-shadow research is detailed in the July 3 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

A terrific PopTech speech by Eben Upton, who started the Rasberry Pi foundation, on the lessons learned in creating what turned out to be a fantastically successful $35 computer. “I remember sitting down with my wife for dinner...and we had this sudden, appalling realization that we had promised 600,000 people that we would build them a $25 dollar computer.” What's clear is that he intended it to be like the BBC micro, a computer designed to be programmed. As such it's optimized for multimedia and outputting to a monitor. Unlike Arduino, which is optimized for I/O and interfacing with physical stuff (lots of analog and digital/PWM inputs and outputs), Raspberry Pi seems to be more oriented towards graphics. Some good lessons on resilience, too. Some things didn't work, others took longer than expected and with great promise comes great expectations and no small number of critics. They just kept improving, adapting, learning and powering through. Inspiring.

Big Oil Is Not So Big on Energy Research

In 2008, the private sector spent about $232 billion on research and development in the United States, dwarfing the modest $60 billion of public funds used for private R&D in the same year, according to the National Science Foundation’s Business R&D and Innovation Survey.

The automobile industry spent an impressive $3 billion pursuing fuel efficiency, electric vehicles and alternatives to the combustion engine.  Similarly, the semiconductor industry spent $3 billion on energy R&D focused on improving the energy efficiency of microprocessors and developing more powerful solar cells.

By contrast, the petroleum, coal and mining industries spent an underwhelming $1.9 billion collectively on energy R&D in 2008.

Converting Your Car To An Electric Vehicle

Gasoline-powered cars. They are perhaps the most inefficient device that many of us use daily. We really should all be driving electric vehicles (or none at all see this post). The internal combustion engine is inefficient in term of pollution, gas costs and maintenance costs (this page explains why electric cars are 90% cleaner than gas-powered cars). But, as you may have heard, there are no electric vehicles available today that resemble conventional cars or trucks. Companies like Phoenix Motorcars, Tesla Motors, Commuter Cars and Miles Automotive Group and ZAP are coming close, but you still can't plunk down some cash and buy an electric car from them today. The only type of electric cars that can be purchased are NEVs (Neighbor Electric Vehicles), which usually have a top speed of about 25 MPH. But wait -- there are still a couple ways to acquire a working electric car right now. One option is to buy a used vehicle that somebody else has converted to an electric vehicle. You can search for use electric vehicles on sites like Craig's List, eBay, or EVFinder. For more advice on buying an used electric car, I would refer you to Shari Prange's recent article "Finding and Buying A Used Electric Vehicle" (PDF FIle) in Home Power Magazine No 119.

But these used electric cars are certainly limited in their availability, especially if you don't live on the West Coast. So may wish to take a plunge and do an electric conversion yourself.

Basically, electric conversion involves removing the entire internal combustion engine from a vehicle, installing an electric motor in its place, and also adding a large bank of batteries. A conversion will cost you about $6000 in parts, and about $1000-$3000 for batteries and installation. But, for all this expense, you'll get a zero-emissions vehicle that costs only a few cents per mile to run. Your electric car will also be more reliable and require much less maintenance that a conventional one. Remember that gas-powered cars cost the owner about $1800 per year on average for fuel costs alone, and there is the addition expense of engine maintenance and oil changes. Electric cars have a better resell values, and are more reliable overall because there are fewer parts to fail. Most of the components are solid-state electronics with no moving parts. The engine of an electric car has a virtually infinite lifespan — the components will probably outlast the chassis. The only real expense is the batteries, which will need to be replaced about every 3 to 4 years.

You can expect your converted vehicle to have a range of 60-80 miles, a top speed of 50-90 MPH, and good acceleration capabilities. It will take about 6-12 hours to completely recharge the car. All of these factors will vary, based on the weight of the car you convert, and the type of engine and batteries you install.

So, what type of car is the best candidate for an electric conversion? A light car (2000-3000 lbs. curb weight) with a manual transmission.You want a light vehicle, because heavy ones severely restrict the range of the electric engine. Automatic transmissions use up too much power because they require the engine to be constantly idling. As far as body style, you need something that can hold all the batteries you'll be installing. Michael Brown, author of Convert It, recommends a car that is light and roomy like a Rabbit, Civic, Sentra, Escort or light pickup truck. The ideal donor car has a good body and interior, sound transmission, but a dead engine.

For electric cars, the best type of driving is an area that is not too hilly and not too cold. Hills obviously put a larger burden on the engine, and thus reduce its range.Cold weather will also reduce performance, but there are many happy electric car owners who live in Canada and Alaska.

There are two types of electric conversions kits available: custom kits that are tailored to a specific vehicles models, and universal kits that can be installed in a variety of vehicles. Universal kits contain all the essential drive-system components but rely on the builder to create custom parts like battery racks or boxes. Custom kits include the entire drive system and battery racks and boxes, customized to suit a particular model. For example, a company called Canadian Electric Vehicles provides kits to convert Chevy S10 trucks, Geo Metros and Dodge Neons. Another company, Electro Automotive, provides kits to convert Volkswagen Rabbits and Porsche 914s.

Here's how the famous Higgs particle gives things mass

Forget equations, physicists tend to explain process in terms of sports and syrup

The infamous Higgs particle has a weighty task: It grants all the other elementary particles their mass. Without it, they — we — would zip around frantically at the speed of light, too foot-loose to form atoms. But how does the Higgs do it?

In lieu of equations, physicists tend to explain the process in terms of sports and syrup.

First, each of the elementary particles acquires its unique set of attributes by interacting with invisible entities called fields. Like football fields, these are large stages upon which individuals (be they electrons or running backs) dash this way and that, and occasionally bash together. But unlike football fields, the fields of physics are three-dimensional, and extend infinitely in all directions.

One such field is the electromagnetic (EM) field — the kind you can feel near the poles of a red and silver bar magnet, but which actually exists everywhere all the time. Each particle interacts with the EM field in a way that depends on its electric charge. For example, electrons, whose charge is -1, tend to move through the field toward the positive ends of bar magnets, and to clump together with positively charged protons.

Like a sports field with its corresponding ball, each field of physics has a corresponding particle. The EM field, for example, is associated with the photon, or particle of light. This correspondence plays out in two ways: First, when the EM field is "excited," meaning its energy is flared up in a certain spot, that flare-up is, itself, a photon.

Secondly, when particles interact with the EM field (for example, when they are drawn toward the oppositely charged end of a magnet), they experience the field by absorbing and emitting a constant stream of "virtual photons" — photons that momentarily pop in and out of existence just for the purpose of mediating the particle-field interaction.

Except for massless photons and gluons, "all elementary particles get their masses from their interactions with the (Higgs) field, kind of like being 'slowed down' by passing through a thick syrup," explained James Overduin, a physicist at Towson University in Maryland.

Some particles have a harder time trudging through the syrupy Higgs field than others, and as a result, they're heavier. However, it isn't known why certain particles, such as the extremely corpulent top quark, are thousands of times more encumbered by the Higgs field than are lightweight particles, such as electrons and neutrinos. "Theorists have been searching for some way to actually predict (particle) masses from first principles. No convincing theory has yet emerged," said John Gunion, author of "The Higgs Hunter's Guide" (Basic Books, 1990) and a professor of physics at the University of California, Davis. But here's where the Higgs particle comes in: Just as the photon mediates interactions with the EM field and is itself an excitation of the EM field, the Higgs particle mediates interactions with the Higgs field, and is itself an excitation of the Higgs field.

Particles trudge through the Higgs field by exchanging virtual Higgs particles with it. And a real Higgs particle surfaces when the field becomes excited, like a slosh of the syrup. Detecting such a slosh (i.e. the particle) is how physicists can be sure the syrup (i.e. the field) exists. "You have to get enough energy to excite the field so that it looks like a particle to us. Otherwise we don't know the field is there," Craig Blocker, a Higgs-hunting physicist at Brandeis University, told Life's Little Mysteries.

But because the Higgs particle is extremely high-energy (or, equivalently, very heavy), it's tough to excite the Higgs field enough to create one.
